Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick wants to follow the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes at the club.

The 35-year-old has recently signed a one-year contract extension with United which will take the defensive midfielder into his twelfth season at the club.

The Englishman moved to Old Trafford from Tottenham in 2006 for a fee of £23 million.

Carrick has shown that he’s not ready to hang his boots up just yet after learning from United legends Giggs and Scholes.

Scholes played until he was 38, while Giggs played until the age of 40, and Carrick feels as though he could play for another few years with the Red Devils.

Since joining the club, the 35-year-old has made over 450 appearances for the Manchester Reds, and although he’s made an impact by winning a stunning five Premier League titles, he has still made nearly half the amount of appearances of the duo.

Giggs made 893 appearances throughout his United career while Scholes made 702.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Carrick said that he is unsure when he will retire: “I have not got an age in mind really, I need to just take it year by year,

“I said that last year, I said it the year before and I’ll say it again next year too.

“I’ve learnt a lot off of Giggsy and the likes of Scholes. I’ve been lucky enough to see that at close quarters and I’ve taken things from that and tried to learn from it.

“It might take me as long as Giggsy, but I’m not too sure.”

The former England international will want to continue to feature in Jose Mourinho’s squad in the hopes of improving on the club’s previous Premier League performance.

Despite winning both the League Cup and Europa League, United finished in sixth position in the Premier League standings.

However, with Mourinho looking to bolster his squad ahead of the 2017/18 campaign, Carrick could lift his sixth Premier League trophy in the coming season.
