Leeds United have agreed to sign Spanish midfielder Madger Gomes from Liverpool, it was announced on Tuesday.

The Championship club confirmed on their official website that they have snapped up the 20-year-old, whose contract with the Premier League giants expires on Friday.

Leeds revealed that Gomes has signed a three-year contract after he was told that he would be released when his contract ran out at Liverpool.

Former Spain Under-18 international Gomes joined the Liverpool academy in 2014 when he was 17 after leaving Spanish club Villarreal, where he had been a contemporary of Sergi Canos and Pedro Chirivella, both of whom have played for the first team at Anfield.

Gomes, who is a central midfielder, made five appearances in Premier League 2 for Liverpool’s Under-23s last season.

Leeds revealed he will initially link up with their own Under-23s squad with a view to training with Thomas Christiansen’s first team.

Speaking about the move, Gomes told the United website: “I’m really excited and happy to start life with Leeds United, I hope to have a good season here.

“Hopefully I will get a chance to progress and make the first team as my dream is to play professionally.”

Leeds have already been active in the summer transfer market, signing midfielder Mateusz Klich from FC Twente for around £1.5million last week.
