Calvert-Lewin delivers verdict on England Under-20s World Cup win

Everton youngster Dominic Calvert-Lewin has said words cannot describe how he felt after winning the Under-20s World Cup with England on Sunday.

The young Three Lions beat Venezuela 1-0 in the final courtesy of Calvert-Lewin’s first half strike, to claim the nation’s first World Cup win since 1966.

However, the side also had Newcastle’s Freddie Woodman to thank in the second period, as he made a fine penalty save to preserve England’s lead.

Calvert-Lewin, 20, was a mainstay of the World Cup winning side, and he featured in all seven games of their campaign.

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo after the final, he said: “Words can’t describe right now what I’m feeling, I’m just trying to take it all in.

“I was knackered from the celebration, but honestly, words just can’t describe it all. It means everything. It’s what you dream of as a kid, playing for your country and winning a World Cup.”

The youngster has been capped by England Under-20s on 15 occasions, and he has scored six goals and provided two assists.

The World Cup win caps off a fine 2016/17 season for the 20-year-old, as he also enjoyed a first campaign at Everton, after signing from Sheffield United last summer for £1.5million.

He made 11 Premier League appearances for the first team, and his only goal came in the 4-0 thrashing of Hull City in March of this year.

However, he also shone for the club’s Under-23s team, scoring four goals in nine Premier League 2 games, as well as supplying two assists.

Calvert-Lewin is primarily a left-winger, but he is also comfortable playing as an attacking midfielder and as an out-and-out striker.
