Anya: English clubs will be monitoring Griffiths

Ikechi Anya believes that English teams will be interested in signing fellow international Scotland teammate Leigh Griffiths this summer following his two goals in the World Cup qualifier on the weekend.

The 26-year-old Celtic forward produced two stunning free-kicks for the Scotland national team against England in the 2-2 draw at Hampden Park on Saturday afternoon.

It was the first time that the striker had scored an international goal for his country in 13 appearances.

The strikes were not enough to close the gap on England who remain at the top of the Group F and lead fourth-placed Scotland by six points.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Derby and Scotland midfielder Anya was full of praise for Griffiths and claimed that English clubs might be keeping a close eye on the forward following his heroics.

“Leigh is a phenomenal player and it says everything about him that he stepped up on that stage, with that pressure on his shoulders, and scored two free-kicks like that,” he said.

“People in England should be taking notice of him, he’s been in great form for Celtic and now he’s doing it for Scotland.

“You can see in the last few performances he’s put in for Scotland that he’s full of confidence.

“With Leigh, it’s all natural ability.”

Griffiths was unable to enjoy a lot of game time last season with Celtic mainly due to a series of injuries and the great form shown by his fellow club teammates.

Although he was not a first-team regular, the Scotland international still played 38 matches in all competitions, scoring 18 goals and providing 15 assists in the process.

He played a key role in helping the Hoops get over the line in the final matches of the season to complete a sensational treble and remain unbeaten in the entire domestic campaign.
