Chris Sutton believes Nottingham Forest’s new signing Jason Cummings needs to “apply himself” and show “greater consistency” in his game.

The Midlands outfit announced on their official website on Saturday afternoon that they had snapped up the 21-year-old forward from Scottish side Hibernian.

It is the first time that the highly-rated attacker will be playing outside of Scotland as he will now be working under the stewardship of Mark Warburton.

Cummings has played most of his career in the second tier of Scottish football where he struck 19 goals last term to help Neil Lennon win the Championship title.

Former Celtic striker Sutton believes Cummings does possess a lot of potential, however, he still feels the youngster needs to show more in his game.

“Very talented player but he needs to apply himself and show greater consistency,” Sutton wrote on his personal Twitter account.

Sutton’s critical comments could be pointing towards Cumming’s record in Scotland’s top tier where he failed to find the back of the net during his 16 matches.

However, his record in the second tier speaks volumes because he has scored 55 goals and provided 19 assists from his 97 matches.

He will now face a different test in the English Championship and join a team that struggled to perform during the recently concluded campaign.

Forest avoided relegation to the third tier of English football by beating Ipswich Town 3-0 on the last day of the season.
