Nottingham Forest legend John McGovern has claimed manager Mark Warburton is a good fit for his former club.

Warburton, 54, left Scottish giants Rangers under a cloud to take the reins at the City Ground in March of this year.

He successfully helped the club avoid relegation as they eventually finished 21st in the Championship, level on points with relegated Blackburn, but a superior goal difference saved them from the drop.

However, despite his former club’s disappointing 2016-17 season, McGovern remains positive and believes Warburton is the right man to take Forest forward as he explained what makes him so special.

Speaking to the Nottingham Post, he said: “He was always right at the top of the list of people who would be able to improve things at the club, largely because of the experience he already had.

“He has knowledge of the league; he understands the Championship because of the time he had with Brentford. I know he had a spell with the second best club in Scotland, at the moment.

“He is highly regarded in the football world because of the jobs he has done, particularly at Brentford. He is one of those managers who you have to think ‘well, I am glad we have got him’.”

Warburton spent two seasons at manager at Ibrox prior to joining Forest, which saw him lead the Glasgow giants to the 2016 Scottish Cup final.

However, he began his managerial career at Brentford in 2014, where he spent two seasons with the Championship side, before moving north to Rangers.

It is set to be a busy transfer window for Warburton and Forest as they look to overhaul their squad ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

They will hope to make several signings who can walk straight into the first team, but one player Warburton is interested in, with one eye on the future, is Motherwell striker Matthew Knox, 17, according to a Daily Record report.
