Steven Gerrard is convinced that Brendan Rodgers is the right man to lead Celtic past the Champions League group stage next season.

The 44-year-old manager has enjoyed a sensational debut season at Celtic Park as he led his side to an unbeaten domestic season, completing a historic treble securing the SPL title, Scottish League Cup and Scottish Cup.

Speaking on BT Sport following the Champions League final (Saturday, 7pm), the former Liverpool skipper is certain that Rodgers can improve Celtic’s fortunes in Europe next season.

“They’ve had an incredible season, going on to win the Treble,” he said.

“They are going to have to go through the qualifying process as well.

“But I think with Brendan in charge, they’re playing very, very good football.

“The players love him and the confidence from winning the treble, hopefully they can get into the group stages and then try to get out.”

Rodgers managed Gerrard during his three-year stint at Anfield and both men almost led Liverpool to their first ever Premier League title in the 2013-14 campaign but they finished second to Manchester City.

The following season, Rodgers failed to guide Liverpool out of the Champions League group stages as the Reds finished third in a group which involved Real Madrid, Basel and Ludogorets.

The Celtic boss suffered the same fate this season as the Hoops finished bottom of their Champions League group which included Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach.

The Scottish giants only managed three points from the six matches played.

The SPL champions will need to get past qualifying if they want to progress to the Champions League group stages for the second consecutive season.
