The agent of Carlos Pena has claimed the Mexican midfielder could complete a move to Rangers in “a few days”.

Pena’s representative Salvador Necochea explained the Scottish giants are currently leading the race to sign his client but warned a club in his native Mexico have also expressed an interest in signing him.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun, Necochea said: “Rangers want him because Pedro Caixinha knows him extremely well and believes his game is perfectly suited to what he needs at Rangers.

“The talks are continuing with Rangers. At the moment, we don’t know whether Carlos’ move will be a transfer or a loan.

“But we are hoping for this to be concluded in a few days.

“Carlos has a couple of options, the strongest of which are Rangers. But it is not 100 per cent yet.

“There is also one club in Mexico who are interested.”

Necochea is “confident” that Pena would be able to get a work permit for his move, despite the fact he has not featured for his national side side this year.

This comes after the Scottish Sun reported previously that the player had opened talks with the Ibrox club.

Pena is known in Mexico as ‘Gullit’ because of his resemblance to Dutch legend Ruud Gullit.

The 27-year-old has been a mainstay in Leon’s midfield this term and has made 23 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

He is a versatile player and has been deployed in various positions across Leon’s midfield this season, seeing him play as an attacking midfielder, on the left-wing and as a second striker.

Pena has also been capped by Mexico on 19 occasions and has scored two goals, however he has not featured since last years Copa America.
