Celtic are in talks to sign Southampton defender Martin Caceres, according to the Sun.

The newspaper claim the versatile Uruguay international, who can play at centre-back or full-back, has decided to quit the Premier League club when his contract ends next month.

The Sun report that Celtic have been in contact with the player about persuading him to make what would be an unexpected move to Scotland.

It is said there is also strong interest in Caceres, 30, from Premier League duo Leicester and Watford.

Former Barcelona and Juventus defender Caceres only joined Southampton on a free transfer in the January transfer window.

Given his pedigree and experience, the Uruguayan, 30, would have expected more involvement than just one Premier League experience.

Manager Claude Puel named Caceres as a substitute on 12 occasions but did not call him off the bench despite the unavailability of first-choice centre-back Virgil van Dijk for the second half of the season due to an ankle injury.

The 69-times international will become a free agent at the end of next month once his short-term deal runs down.
