Rangers are in desperate need of some defensive steel in the summer and the perfect man could be lying in wait south of the border.

After he was sent back to Fulham following a loan stay at Wolves, the future of defensive enforcerĀ Richard Stearman seems uncertain and would present Pedro Caixinha with a perfect chance to bolster his back line.

Rangers’ defence has really struggled this season, especially in recent weeks when Caixinha has been forced to field members of his development squad to fill in the gaps of his back four.

Although the youngsters did well, they need a leader and a player with a great amount of experience.

Stearman, 29, is the right man to replace a player like Clint Hill, who is leaving Ibrox within a matter of weeks when his contract expires.

The ex-Wolves man has well over 300 matches worth of experience under his belt, with a good chunk of it coming in the Premier League.

He’s not the most dazzling option out there as a move for a former England Under-21 international could set eyes rolling among the Ibrox crowd.

However there’s no denying his ability and he showcased it for all to see this season as he helped guide Wolves away from the English Championship’s relegation zone.

The fact that he was sent out on loan from Fulham means that they might not be interested in his services as they look to launch another assault on promotion to the Premier League.

Rangers really need to look at players who can help close up the gap to Celtic and by snapping up someone like Stearman, who has a few years left in him, would definitely be a good start.
