Celtic defender Josh Kerr has admitted that it was a “tough decision” to leave the club after he confirmed on Twitter that he is joining Premier League side Brighton.

The south coast club revealed on their official website on Tuesday morning that the 19-year-old will join up with their under-23 side.

Kerr represented the Bhoys at the under-19 level during his time at Parkhead but he failed to make a single senior appearance.

After making the switch down south, the versatile defender, who can play at right-back and centre-back, sent this message to Celtic and Brighton fans.

“Delighted to sign for Brighton,” Kerr wrote on his personal Twitter account. “Tough decision to leave Celtic and would like to thank everyone at the club.”

Coatbridge-born Kerr came through the ranks at Celtic and was part of the team that competed in the UEFA Youth League tournament.

He played six youth matches, with his team failing to pick up a single win and suffering six defeats from their seven matches.

During the youth tournament, the likes of La Liga duo Barcelona and Valencia were their opponents as well as English side Manchester City.

Following Brighton’s promotion to the top tier, it remains to be seen whether Kerr will be able to break into the first-team set-up.

The Seagulls will be playing in their maiden Premier League campaign next season as the likes of City, Tottenham, champions Chelsea and Liverpool will prove to be tough opposition.

Chris Hughton’s side missed out on the Championship title, with Newcastle being crowned champions on the last day of the season.
