Alan Shearer believes that Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez will have already started the process of signing new players for next season.

The Magpies recently secured a return to the Premier League at the first attempt after winning the Championship title.

The north-east club managed to pip league rivals Brighton to the title on the final day and the pair will both be in the top flight next season, while the third promoted side will be decided through the drama of the play-offs.

Newcastle managed to handle the pre-season expectations of being promotion favourites to achieve their aim and will now be looking to establish themselves back in the Premier League.

They were relegated from the top flight in the 2015/16 campaign and were two points away from safety.

Shearer feels that Benitez will already have drawn up plans to improve his side for next year and will be looking at bringing in new quality players.

“I think there is big improvements needed (in the summer),” Shearer said, as cited by Coral’s official Twitter account. “Rafa will know what positions, I’m sure he has already started the process of going out and trying to sign players.

“They will need a few players to try and do what they want to do in the Premier League which I’m sure is try and finish in and around mid-table in their first season back.”

Newcastle had a revamp of their squad last summer as they purchased proven Championship players to get them out of the competitive division.

The club’s supporters will be hoping they take the same approach and assemble a squad godo enough to stay in the Premier League.

They have a very experienced manager at the helm in Benitez, who has been at elite clubs such as Real Madrid, Chelsea and Liverpool during his career.

He decided to stay at St James’ Park despite their relegation and will hope that he can attract some strong players in the summer.
