Celtic star Mikael Lustig joked he and his teammates could retire after securing a historic treble on Saturday.

The Hoops beat Aderdeen 2-1 in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden to clinch a domestic treble, having already wrapped up the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish League Cup earlier in the campaign.

It was only the fourth treble in the Glasgow giants’ history, and to make it more impressive, the side completed the entire domestic season unbeaten.

Speaking to the Scottish Sun after the cup final win, Lustig said: “What a season it’s been and what a team. It’s unbelievable. To go through the season unbeaten and lift three trophies — I don’t know if we’ll see that again.

“We can all retire now! No, we still have a lot to learn. We still want to get better and improve in Europe. But to win a treble, not losing a game, it’ll be tough to beat.

“All the boys were nervous going into the final because we knew we had a chance to write history. But we did and hopefully we can take more steps in the right direction now.”

Brendan Rodgers virtually walked the league in his first season in charge at Parkhead, masterminding 34 wins in his side’s 38 games, and finishing 30 points clear of their nearest rivals Aberdeen, and 39 points ahead of Rangers.

Lustig was a mainstay in the Hoops’ back line this term, making 49 appearances in all competitions.

The 30-year-old joined the club from Swedish outfit Rosenborg in January 2012 on a free transfer and he has since cemented the right-back position and has played more than 180 league and cup games for the club.

He is also a 57-time Sweden international, and he featured for 20 minutes in their 3-2 friendly win over Portugal in March of this year.
