Philippe Coutinho responds to Barcelona speculation

Liverpool attacker Philippe Coutinho has responded to speculation linking him with a summer exit by reassuring fans he is still under contract at the club.

The 24-year-old has been subject to increasing speculation over a move to La Liga, where five-time European champions Barcelona are reportedly eyeing a big-money move.

Catalan-based newspaper Sport  had claimed earlier this month that Barcelona are looking to bring the Brazilian international to the Nou Camp.

But they also reported that Coutinho was open to a move to Spain, and had told his representatives to begin negotiations with the club.

However, the player has since poured cold water on the reports and distanced himself from a potential summer move, by admitting he ‘does not understand’ where the speculation has come from.

He said, as quoted by the Mirror: “A lot of people have been asking me this, but I don’t understand. I have a contract with Liverpool – a long contract. This speculation is for other people only.”

The response will be music to the ears of Anfield supporters, who will be delighted to see Coutinho fighting their corner on their return to the Champions League next season, and hopefully in the years to come.

Coutinho signed a new five-year deal less than four months ago, which sees him under contract in Merseyside until the summer of 2022.

The attacking-midfield sensation was one of Liverpool’s standout performers this season, contributing 14 goals and eight assists as Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a top four finish in the Premier League.
