Newcastle are hoping to strengthen the wide areas in their squad and have targeted Tom Lawrence, Andros Townsend and Seyi Ojo, according to a report in the Chronicle.

The newspaper claims that the recently-promoted Premier League club want to sign two left-wingers this summer and have carried out background checks on Leicester City attacker Lawrence.

It is said that the 23-year-old, who has been on a season-long loan at Championship side Ipswich, has been tracked all season by the Magpies following his impressive showings at Portman Road.

Lawrence played 34 league matches for Mick McCarthy’s side, scoring nine goals and supplying 11 assists for a team that struggled for the majority of the campaign.

The report details that Newcastle will announce the departures of the senior duo, Yoan Gouffran and Vurnon Anita in the coming days which will free up space on the wing and in midfield for manager Rafa Benitez to fill.

It is said that Benitez wants to beef up his wide options and has a list of players that include Palace winger Townsend, who left the club last summer, Liverpool academy product Ojo and Lawrence.

Former Manchester United player Lawrence has only made four appearances in the top flight and has struggled to force his way into the Foxes team since making a £1millions switch from Old Trafford in 2015.

The report states that Lawrence’s age and ability to play various roles in the side appeals to the club, who will be looking to make their mark upon their return to the Premier League.
