Mainz have confirmed physiotherapist Christopher Rohrbeck is leaving the club to join Liverpool ahead of next season.

Rohrbeck, who spent 14 years at the Bundesliga outfit, joins his former boss Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

The 38-year-old physiotherapist will join the Reds’ existing medical and sports science team.

In a statement, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo, Mainz sporting director Rouven Schroder said: “Christopher Rohrbeck has worked for us in a reliable fashion on a high level for many years and was now presented with a chance to switch jobs.

“Even though for us this means losing one of our long-time employees, we wanted to grant Christopher and his family their wish to take on a fresh challenge in Liverpool.”

Mainz is of course where Klopp spent the majority of his playing career, making more than 300 appearances, before going on to manage the club between 2001 and 2008.

Klopp has worked with Rohrbeck previously, as will Reds goalkeeper Loris Karius, who was signed from Mainz last summer for £5million.

Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League this term, securing a return to Champions League next season.

The club travelled to Australia on Wednesday to play an end of season friendly against Sydney FC, which they won 3-0 courtesy of goals from Daniel Sturridge, Alberto Moreno and Roberto Firmino.

Mainz finished 15th in the Bundesliga this term, level on points with VfL Wolfsburg in 16th, who will play a relegation play-off needing to win to stay in the division.

It was a disappointing campaign for Mainz who finished sixth in the league in the 2015/16 season.
