Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has signed a two-year contract extension.

The North London club confirmed the news on their official website on Wednesday afternoon and on their official Twitter page.

Wenger has been in charge at Arsenal since 1996, and should the two-year deal be completed, his reign as manager will be extended to 23 years.

The Frenchman led the Gunners to a record-breaking seventh FA Cup last Saturday as his side beat Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley.

However, Arsenal endured a disappointing league campaign which saw them end up fifth in the Premier League table – outside the top four for the first time since the Frenchman arrived at the club.

The 2016/17 campaign also saw the Gunners knocked out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage for the seventh consecutive season, as Bayern Munich thrashed them in both legs to win 10-2 on aggregate.

The 67-year-old boss has won a host of honours during his time with the North Londoners, and as well as his seven FA Cup wins, he has also guided the club to three Premier League titles, six Community Shield victories and a Champions League final.

Despite having not won the league since 2003/04 when Wenger’s Invincibles stormed the division, he is confident of mounting a serious title charge next term.

Speaking to Arsenal’s official website, he said: “We are looking at what we do well and how we can be stronger everywhere. This is a strong group of players and with some additions we can be even more successful.

“We’re committed to mounting a sustained league challenge and that will be our focus this summer and next season.

“I love this club and I am looking forward to the future with optimism and excitement.”

This term the Gunners finished 18 points adrift of champions Chelsea, despite finishing in second-place in the 2015/16 campaign, behind Leicester City.
