Newcastle scouts have been sent to watch Bologna striker Mattia Destro, according to a report.

Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb claim that the Magpies have representatives at the Serie A match between Bologna and Pescara on Sunday.

The report details that Premier League rivals Watford will also have scouts present for the Italian league clash eyeing Destro, as well as monitoring midfielder Mamadou Coulibaly.

Destro has been in strong form so far this season and managed nine goals in 30 appearances across all competitions.

The forward has come into a purple patch of form at the back-end of the season and has netted three times in his last three games.

The 26-year-old has settled since he joined Bologna from AC Milan in 2015 and has scored 17 goals for them.

He managed to burst on to the scene as a youngster and made eight international caps for Italy, but has not featured for the national side since 2014.

His most prolific spell in his career came at Italian giants where he managed 29 goals in 68 appearances.

Newcastle are set to chase down a new striker following their promotion from the Championship and Rafael Benitez will be looking to establish his side in the Premier League.

They currently have a number of forwards in their squad, but not many of them are proven in the top flight.

Destro is yet to experience football outside of Italy during his career, but has proven himself in a competitive European league.
