Chelsea have followed up their interest in Antonio Rudiger.
According to a report in The Sun the Roma defender was watched by Chelsea spies in the Italian Cup tie against city rivals Lazio.
Rudiger was watched in the recent friendly between Germany and England with Antonio Conte looking to strengthen his central defence for next season’s Champions League campaign.
The 24-year-old has been subjected to racist abuse this season leading to speculation that he could quit the club.
Roma have Rudiger under contract until 2020 but will have a problem holding onto the defender if Chelsea come in with a bid of over £40m.
Having played in Italy and Germany the 24-year-old has the sort of experience that appeals to Conte who insists on strong defending as the base for all his teamwork.
Manchester United have also been linked to the defender but the opportunity to live in London and work with Conte will be hard to match.
