Inter Milan have joined the race to sign Virgil van Dijk.

According to a report on talkSPORT the Southampton defender is being viewed as the ideal type of defender to form the backbone of a new look side ready to compete at home and in Europe.

Southampton are adamant that they won’t be pressured into selling the defender but are expected to receive bids of over £50m for the Dutchman.

Chelsea and Manchester City both made enquires in January but after selling Jose Fonte to West Ham there was no way that the Saints would also sell van Dijk.

Despite being out injured with an ankle injury speculation has continued to surround the 25-year-old who joined from Celtic in August 2015.

Inter have been given significant investment and are determined to mount a challenge to Juventus’ domestic domination and return to the Champions League.

Signing van Dijk would be a massive statement of intent but will require a world record fee for a defender to see off the interest from the wealthy English clubs.
