Richard Dunne has urged Everton to do whatever it takes to sign Wayne Rooney.

Speaking to talkSPORT the former Goodison defender understands exactly the lift that the entire club would get by the return of the ‘prodigal son’.

Director of Football Steve Walsh and Ronald Koeman have both gone public with their enthusiasm for the deal which has been brought into the public after Rooney rejected offers to move to China.

As a teenager Rooney left Everton under a cloud for Old Trafford in 2004 but those feelings have mellowed over the years with the Goodison club clearly close to his heart.

There is a lot left in Wayne Rooney,” Dunne said. “He has obviously not had a run of games this year but in terms of fitness and ability that is not really in question.

He just has to look at Ibrahimovic and see how strong and how good he is at his age, 35. Rooney is only 31.

It would be a great signing for Everton, if they can get him, but I’m sure there will be a long list of clubs who think Rooney can improve their side.”

Rooney pulled on an Everton shirt again for Duncan Ferguson’s testimonial with that gesture replicated when Everton provided the opposition for Rooney’s testimonial match.

Ronald Koeman has struggled to attract big names to Goodison but if Rooney is snapped up the club’s credibility in the transfer market will soar.
