Southampton are waiting on a work permit for Martin Caceres after agreeing to a short term offer to play until the end of the season.

According to a report in The Sun Southampton will pay out £850,000 in wages to Caceres who hasn’t played in over a year.

The sale of Jose Forte to West Ham followed by Virgil van Dijk’s ankle injury has forced Claude Puel’s hand into bringing in the experienced Uruguayan internationalist.

Caceres suffered an Achilles injury last February and will have to prove his fitness but with the transfer window closed Puel had limited options available.

The 29-year-old claims to have been fit since October but hasn’t been able to play without a contract.

Crystal Palace were the first English club to offer Caceres training facilities but after a short spell at Selhurst Prk he switched to St Mary’s and could now be just over a month away from a Wembley appearance in the final of the EFL Cup against Manchester United.
