Daniel Sturridge has been linked with a surprise loan move to Southampton in January.

According to a report in The Sun the Saints are interested in bringing the Liverpool striker to St Mary’s but may only be able to arrange a loan deal during the January transfer window.

Sturridge has fallen out of favour with Jurgen Klopp and is keen to secure regular first team football to bolster his international prospects.

The 27-year-old has only started in four Premier League matches this season and has been used as a substitute in five other games.

Despite his lack of club football Gareth Southgate turned to Sturridge for the World Cup qualifier against Scotland and was rewarded with a superb header to open the scoring in the 3-0 win.

Liverpool have been linked with a double move for Virgil van Dijk and Sam McQueen during the January transfer window and may be able to offer Sturridge to sweeten that package.

The former Chelsea striker’s personal terms mean that a permanent deal is unlikely but in January a short term loan could suit all parties.
