It is a sign of how far that Southampton have come in recent years that the signing of Gaston Ramirez was met with huge fanfare back in August 2012.
Then a club record signing for £12 million, the impressive signing of Ramirez signalled the Saints’ intent as they embarked on their first top flight campaign following a seven-year absence.
Undoubtedly a talented player who had represented Uruguay at the London 2012 Olympic Games prior to his Saints switch, Ramirez ultimately went down as a flop signing by Ronald Koeman.
Now at Middlesbrough of course, Ramirez hasn’t completed too much noteworthy work but did look a class above when playing for Boro at Championship level last season, scoring seven goals in 18 appearances on loan from Saints.
