He made over 200 Premier League appearances for Manchester United winning five top flight titles in the process but Nemanja Vidic might’ve once represented arch-rivals Liverpool instead, report Metro.

Revealing that he nearly opted to sign for Rafael Benitez’s Liverpool back in 2006, it was an intercepting phonecall from Sir Alex Ferguson that convinced him he should decide otherwise.

Former Serbian international Vidic claimed: “Yes [it’s true]. Rafa Benitez called me and I nearly went there. I was interested in going, but my English wasn’t good and I was struggling to communicate.

“Then Manchester United came. Fergie called me at my apartment and said: ‘I watched you play for Serbia against France – I want you here.”

Successfully joining Manchester United for just £7 million from Spartak Moscow back in January 2006, Vidic didn’t only go on to become a bargain signing but also a Red Devils legend, winning the Premier League Player of the Season prize twice, both in 2008/09 and 2010/11.

As the story went, Vidic’s encounters with the team he may have joined in Liverpool were usually battling affairs with the combative Serb actually sent off against the Merseyside outfit four times in his career.

Seemingly missing out on his signature for not wanting him enough, Vidic claimed it was the Red Devils’ decisiveness which convinced him they were the right club to join.

“United were decisive. Everything was done very quickly, within two days,” continued Vidic.
