According to Mirror Football, Sunderland are on the verge of signing former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboue; whilst Newcastle United have confirmed Liam Smith’s loan move to Blackpool via their official website.

The Ivory Coast international spent six seasons at Arsenal, amassing 214 appearances across all competitions and part of the squad that reached the 2006 Champions League final, before moving to Galatasaray in summer 2011.

He’s been without a club since leaving the Turkish outfit at the end of last season and has spent the last three weeks training with the Black Cats with the view to earning a contract at the Stadium of Light.

And Mirror Football claim manager Sam Allardyce is now set to hand the 32-year-old a short-term deal after impressing for the Mackems’ U21 squad against Leicester City on Monday night.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United have confirmed Liam Smith’s move to League One side Blackpool on their official website. The prodigious midfielder, who first joined the club’s academy ranks in 2002, has moved to Bloomfield Road on a youth loan – meaning he can still represent the Magpies at U21 level this season.

The 20-yar-old has been a core member of Newcastle’s U21 squad in recent seasons and signed his first professional contract last summer. Smith could make his debut for Blackpool, who are currently fourth-bottom in the third tier, against Millwall this weekend.
