Transfer News: Man United set to hijack Liverpool’s pursuit of game-shy Barca ace

Marc-Andre ter Stegen

According to reports from Mirror Football, Manchester United are eyeing Liverpool transfer target Marc-Andre Ter Stegen as a potential replacement for David De Gea.

The Spain international’s planned transfer to the Bernabeu infamously collapsed last summer but Los Blancos are expected to revive their interest in the coming transfer window, with recent reports describing him as ‘irresistible‘ to the Real Madrid hierarchy, whilst PSG were revealed as rival suitors earlier this week.

Should the 25-year-old be prized away from Old Trafford this summer – a distinct possibility without the incentive of Champions League football next season – Mirror Football claim Manchester United will join Liverpool in the hunt to sign Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen.

The 23-year-old is one of the most exciting young goalkeepers in world football, proving as much during his three seasons as Borussia Monchengladbach’s No.1, but since moving to the Nou Camp in summer 2014 has been reserved almost exclusively for Copa del Rey and Champions League action – with Claudio Bravo filling the sticks for the Catalans in La Liga.

That could instigate a summer departure and Liverpool’s interest in acquiring the German international via the transfer market has been well documented for some time. They were reported to have seen an £11million bid rejected during the January transfer window and launched a follow-up bid of £19million last month, with the media expecting them to source an upgrade on Simon Mignolet in the summer.

But rivalled interest from Manchester United could see an interesting skirmish emerge during the summer transfer window. Manchester City have also been linked with Ter Stegen in recent weeks, whilst Mirror Football mention a move to Borussia Dortmund as another potential scenario.
