Mario Gotze

According to Mirror Football, Liverpool are targeting a £37million deal for Bayern Munich forward Mario Gotze; whilst The Daily Mail report that Arsenal favourite Freddie Ljungberg is set to return to the club as a youth coach.

23-year-old Gotze, who bagged an extra-time winner for Germany during the 2014 World Cup final, emerged as one of the most exciting youngsters in Europe whilst working under Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund – where the duo won consecutive Bundesliga titles together.

He made the shock switch to rivals Bayern Munich in summer 2013 but has struggled to hold down a consistent role in their starting Xi. Carlo Ancelotti’s summer arrival at the Allianz Arena could change the versatile attacker’s fortunes, but by that point, his contract will have entered its final year.

Ruled out until February due to injury, Gotze won’t be able to leave Bayern during the January transfer window. But Mirror Football claim Liverpool are eyeing a summer deal instead – potentially worth a club-record £37million.

Meanwhile, The Daily Mail report that Arsenal favourite Freddie Ljungberg – who claimed four goals in 30 appearances as the north Londoners lifted the Premier League title undefeated during their legendary ‘Invincibles’ 2003/04 campaign – is set to return to the club as their U15s coach.

The former Sweden international wrote on Twitter earlier today; “Hope everyone had a happy new year. Enjoying my last week in #CapeTown before I go home to coach Arsenals u-15! V excited :-)”

Gunners gaffer Arsene Wenger responded to the news during today’s pre-match press conference ahead of Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Sunderland on Saturday, telling reporters; “He wants to make his [coaching] licence. They have to take on a youth team and we are happy to give him that.”
