According to reports from Mirror Football, Manchester United have put their major transfer plans on hold amid uncertainty over the future of manager Louis van Gaal.

The Red Devils may have recorded a vital 1-0 win over Liverpool last Sunday, but they’re still two points off the Premier League’s top four and the Dutchman will be axed if he fails to secure Champions League football for next season.

Likewise, van Gaal is reportedly considering stepping down of his own accord next summer, a year before his Old Trafford contract expires, due to the huge pressures of the job. The 64-year-old’s family are growing increasingly concerned it could have an impact on his health.

Consequentially, the Red Devils have shelved all major transfer plans and are unlikely to make any signings during the January transfer window.

They appeared close to signing Lazio’s Felipe Anderson earlier this month and are also reportedly considering a bid for PSG striker Edinson Cavani, but the United hierarchy are reluctant to spend in case they part with LVG before the start of next season. The Iron Tulip’s replacement will naturally want to bring in stellar names of his own choosing.

However, United still intend to spend big in the summer, with Real Madrid winger Gareth Bale their priority target.
