According to reports from The Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur have earmarked former Manchester City star Alvaro Negredo as a potential alternative to long-term transfer target Saido Berahino.

The Lilywhites are widely expected to go back in for the West Bromwich Albion striker after launching a series of failed bids last summer, leading to the 22-year-old’s infamous Twitter rant at Jeremy Peace during the final days of the transfer window as the Baggies chairman refused to sell.

But they are concerned the Black Country outfit will refuse to do business in January due to the bad blood between both boardrooms, further fuelled by Berahino’s slump in form since his much-anticipated move to White Hart Lane fell through. He’s scored just three times across all competitions this season and hasn’t started a Premier League fixture since October.

Accordingly, the north Londoners have drawn up a list of contingency signings, with Spain international Negredo at the top of their list.

The powerful forward hasn’t found much luck at Valencia, netting just six times in 35 La Liga outings since the start of last season. But ‘The Beast’ impressed during the 2013/14 campaign as his nine goals and direct style of play helped Manchester City lift the Premier League title and his stock remains high in England.

Valencia boss Gary Neville, however, is determined to hold onto the 30-year-old centre-forward as the Manchester United legend pushes for Champions League qualification during his interim appointment at the Mestalla.
