According to reports from Mirror Football, Chelsea are monitoring Tottenham Hotspur target Saido Berahino ahead of the January transfer window.
After netting 14 times in 38 appearances last season, the West Bromwich Albion striker was subject to a series of bids from Spurs during the summer. But the two clubs couldn’t agree on the structure of the deal, leaving Berahino to infamously blast chairman Jeremy Peace on Twitter as the transfer window drew to a close.
The Lilywhites are expected to revive their interest in January after manager Mauricio Pochettino refused to rule out a bid for the 22-year-old last week. The Argentine is desperate to strengthen his strikeforce, with Harry Kane the only out-and-out centre-forward in the White Hart Lane squad.
“I’m very happy with my squad but always in every position you can improve. We have offensive players who can play like Harry. But maybe it’s true [that Spurs will sign a striker in January]. I recognise they are not specifically strikers so maybe we will work to try to find such a player who we can add in the next transfer window or in the summer to try to help the team. It is important we find someone who is very specific,” he said, as quoted by The Daily Mail.
But the north Londoners aren’t alone in their pursuit of Berahino. Chelsea and Manchester United have both been linked with the Burundi-born forward over last few weeks and Mirror Football suggest the Premier League champions are particularly keen to rival Spurs’ interest. They’re ‘monitoring the situation’ amid doubts over Diego Costa’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge.
West Brom manager Tony Pulis was particularly candid when discussing Berahino’s form last week, claiming he’s not been “anywhere near as good” as last season due to Spurs’ failed summer bids. That suggests the Baggies boss might be willing to cash in when the transfer market reopens next month.
