According to reports from The Sun, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho wanted to sign now-Manchester City star Raheem Sterling during the summer transfer window.

The British tabloid claim the Blues boss had anticipated his squad would struggle to live up to the title-winning heights of last season and wanted to bring in four big names during the summer; Everton’s John Stones, Real Madrid duo Raphael Varane and Gareth Bale and then-Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling.

But the Stamford Bridge hierarchy were reluctant to spend and limited Mourinho to making squad signings, swapping Arsenal-bound Petr Cech for Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic and veteran striker Didier Drogba for loan acquisition Radamel Falcao.

Instead, Sterling moved to the Etihad stadium in a club-record £44million deal, later broken by fellow summer arrival Kevin De Bruyne, leading Mourinho and the England winger to experience polarising fortunes.

The 20 year-old has helped fire the Citizens to the top of the Premier League table with four goals and one assist in 10 appearances, whilst the Portuguese’s Chelsea clan find themselves in 15th place after suffering six defeats in eleven league games.

An unnamed close friend reportedly told The Sun; “Jose felt he was being asked to work miracles. The club thought he didn’t need any new players, that essentially the same squad could dominate again.

“But he knew differently. He laughed at the idea but not because he found the situation funny — far from it. He knew he needed a fresh injection of talent, he knew he needed to increase competition for places and depth to his squad. He knew it was dangerous to stand still and give other sides the opportunity to play catch-up.”
