According to reports from Manchester Evening News, World Cup legend Lothar Matthaus has warned Bayern Munich forward Thomas Muller against joining Chelsea and Manchester United.

The retired midfielder’s glistening career saw him claim seven Bundesliga titles with Bayern Munich and lift the 1980 European Championship and 1990 World Cup with Germany. He also boasts the record for World Cup appearances, a whopping 25, and has been involved in the most tournaments of any player – five.

Muller seems set to follow in similar footsteps, having already won the 2014 World Cup with Die Mannschaft alongside a Champions League title and four Bundesliga honours with the Bavarians, but his future at the Allianz Arena remains uncertain.

Manchester United are long-term admirers of the 26-year-old and reportedly launched an ill-fated £88million bid during the summer transfer window. Louis van Gaal’s side have been tipped to revive their interest in recent weeks, amid news that Muller is stalling on a contract offer that would extend his current terms until 2021.

But Matthaus, who featured against the Reds in the 1999 Champions League final, believes Muller should reject interest from the Premier League to become a one-club man at Bayern.

As quoted by Manchester Evening News, he said; “He does not need Manchester United or Chelsea. My opinion is he should definitely stay at Bayern for his lifetime. He started his professional career at Bayern and I think he should end his career here. He does not need any new challenge as he is always playing at the highest level every year at Bayern.”
