Grzegorz Krychowiak

According to reports from The Telegraph yesterday evening, Manchester City have joined Arsenal in the race to sign Sevilla defensive midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak.

The Poland international was in superlative form last season, averaging 3.3 tackles, 3 interceptions and 3.4 successful aerial duels per match to earn a place in La Liga’s Team of the Year, whilst helping Sevilla claim a second consecutive Europa League title.

Arsenal and Manchester United were both linked with the 25 year-old during the summer, with the north Londoners believed to be particularly keen due to the lack of mettle in their engine room. The Spanish press claim they were making ‘firm inquiries‘ until the final week of the transfer window.

The Gunners are still interested, according to The Telegraph, despite Arsene Wenger’s reluctance to activate Krychowiak’s £21million release clause during the summer, but they now face formidable competition for his signature from Premier League title rivals Manchester City.

The British newspaper claim Manuel Pellegrini has shortlisted the 6 foot 1 midfielder as he begins ‘planning for the future’, with the view to a bid in summer 2016.

Interestingly, City face Sevilla and Krychowiak in a Champions League clash tomorrow evening. The La Liga outfit are currently ahead of City in Group D, separated by goal difference. Juventus, meanwhile, boast a three-point surplus in top spot.
