Victor Wanyama

According to reports from Mirror Football yesterday evening, Southampton are hoping to tie in-demand midfielder Victor Wanyama down to a five-year contract.

The Kenyan international arrived at St. Mary’s from Celtic in summer 2013 for a then-club record fee of £12.5million and has since emerged as an integral component of the Saints’ starting Xi, amassing 60 appearances in the Premier League.

He was strongly linked with a move away from St Mary’s during the summer – particularly to Tottenham Hotspur, which would have seen him reunited former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino at White Hart Lane.

Manager Ronald Koeman publicly insisted in August that the 24 year-old wouldn’t be sold, prompting Wanyama to inform the club that he wanted to leave on two separate occasions during the final week of the transfer window – but a move never materialised.

Reports earlier this month revealed Chelsea had entered the race to sign the 6 foot 2 enforcer whilst Spurs remain interested, with a £20million bid potentially on the cards.

But according to Mirror Football, both London outfits will see their hopes of signing Wanyama dashed if Southampton tie him down to a new five-year deal as planned.

Likewise, Wanyama has insisted he’s put the summer transfer window behind him, recently claiming; “I just don’t want to remember that situation. I’m happy to go in the pitch and forget what happened, so I’m really looking forward to putting good performances for Southampton.

“I’ve forgotten what happened. I’m now progressing on my club and it’s been good, so I’m looking forward to putting in good performances.”
