According to reports from Mirror Football this morning, club president Florentino Perez has claimed Manchester United were interested in signing three Real Madrid players this summer – including Arsenal target Karim Benzema.
The Gunners’ sustained interest in the France international, who boasts 134 goals in 282 appearances for Los Blancos, was well-documented throughout the transfer window; especially following claims that he could be ousted from Real’s starting XI due to Rafa Benitez’s plans to utilise Cristiano Ronaldo as a lone centre-forward.
But club president Florentino Perez, who has the final say on all things transfers at the Bernabeu, claims Manchester United were also keen to sign the 6 foot 2 striker this summer following the sale of Robin van Persie to Fenerbahce, along with ex-Tottenham winger Gareth Bale and prodigious centre-half Raphael Varane.
As quoted by Mirror Football, he told Spanish radio station Cadena Ser; “We know that United showed interest in Bale, Benzema and Varane.”
Amid their search for added firepower, United turned to Monaco prodigy Anthony Martial instead, signing him on deadline day for £36million to make him the most expensive teenager in the world. It has since been revealed that the 19 year-old’s fee could rise to £58million dependent on performance-related bonuses.
Perez went on to deny rumours that the Red Devils made a €100million bid for Wales international Bale and also insisted that Sergio Ramos was never close to an Old Trafford move, despite copious reports on the contrary.
“I never saw Ramos leaving this club. He was never close to doing so. Manchester United meddled in the situation. Those who want to do harm to Real Madrid meddle but nothing really happened, nothing more than happens every summer,” he said.
