Ashley Young

According to reports from The Independent this morning, Ashley Young is on the verge of signing a new contract at Manchester United.

The veteran winger joined the Red Devils from Aston Villa in an £18million deal during summer 2011 but has spent much of his Old Trafford career battling injuries, poor form and accusations of serial simulation.

But the former England international found a new lease of life under Louis van Gaal last season, recording two goals and five assists in 26 Premier League appearances whilst also filling in as the Red Devils’ emergency left-back for a significant chunk of the campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the former Watford man this summer, with a new wide man one of their top priorities in the transfer market. They’re hoping United will be prepared to part with Young on the cheap, being now 30 years of age and into the final 12 months of his Carrington contract.

But Young has distanced himself from rumours of a White Hart Lane switch and according to The Independent, is now ‘very close’ to agreeing extended terms with the Red Devils.

Although potential figures are yet to materialise, the British newspaper expect a long-term contract with an improved salary.

  • United Red says:

2 years ago I would have sold Young and taken whatever was offered but recently he has shown improved form and should be offered a new deal.
Young is not everyone’s ‘cup of tea’ but even so if he keeps playing the way he has been then he will be a decent back up to either Januzaj, Pereira OR Pedro, that is if he is still coming and doesn’t do a u-turn and end up in Munich?
