Marco Reus

According to reports from The Daily Star this afternoon, Arsenal are set to hijack Liverpool’s pursuit of Borussia Dortmund forward Marco Reus.

The German international boasts a prolific haul of 37 goals and 27 assists in 82 Bundesliga outings for the Westfalen outfit since joining them from Borussia Monchengladbach in summer 2012.

In that time, he’s helped fire Dortmund to consecutive DFL Super Cups and the 2013 Champions League final, whilst claiming the Bundesliga’s Player of the Year award for 2014 and generally emerging as one of the most formidable attacking threats in world football.

He signed a contract until 2019 in February but Dortmund’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and the subsequent sacking of Jurgen Klopp could force the 26 year-old to reconsider his options.

Earlier this month, Reus was linked with a move to Liverpool, with manager Brendan Rodgers allegedly desperate to sign the 25-cap international as a direct replacement for now-Manchester City star Raheem Sterling.

Italian journalist Tancredi Palmeri has since claimed the Merseysiders are ‘working intensely’ to bring Reus to Anfield, with a club-record £46million bid allegedly in the pipeline.

But according to The Star, who cite Italian outlet TuttoMercatoWeb, Arsenal are now set to hijack Liverpool’s pursuit of the 5 foot 11 attacker. They claim Arsene Wenger views Reus as the perfect signing to complete the Gunners’ attacking midfield trio alongside Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
