Tottenham to thwart Man United’s pursuit of £32m front-man

|

Christian Benteke

According to reports from The Daily Star this morning, Tottenham Hotspur are set to enter the Christian Benteke race with a £20million bid for the Aston Villa front-man.

The Belgium international ended the 2014/15 campaign in a blaze of form, bagging twelve goals in his final 13 appearances to bring his Villains total to 49 goals in 99 outings.

That, in conjunction with the recent revelation that Benteke’s contract includes a £32million release clause – as This Is Futbol revealed last month – has generated widespread interest in the 24 year-old, with The Daily Star claiming Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are all considering summer bids.

And according to the British tabloid, the White Hart Lane outfit are also preparing an offer – albeit, at £12million less than the 6 foot 3 striker’s buy-out fee.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino is desperate to ease the goalscoring burden on this season’s top scorer, Harry Kane, and Benteke more than fits his preferred mould of classic No.9s.

Whether Aston Villa would sell their talismanic forward for that amount – and whether reports of a Spurs bid will convince Benteke’s other suitors to follow suit – remains to be seen.
