Earlier this week came news of a rather audacious bid from Manchester United – a £110million swoop for Real Madrid duo Raphael Varane and Gareth Bale, as reported by The Independent.
The former is widely considered to be the most promising young centre-back in world football – described as such by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho in March 2014 – whilst the latter is the most expensive signing in the history of the sport, and despite his tribulations this season is still seen as an integral part of the Real Madrid starting Xi.

Unsurprisingly, United’s double-swoop was immediately rejected by the Bernabeu outfit, suggesting it will take a rather ridiculous fee for them to change their minds.
