According to reports from Mirror Football this morning, the expected departure of Arsenal and Chelsea target Ilkay Gundogan could stop Borussia Dortmund selling Mats Hummels to Manchester United this summer.
The Germany midfielder has already admitted his intentions to leave Westfalen at the end of the season when his Dortmund contract enters it’s final year, with Premier League trio Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United all considered to be amongst his likeliest suitors – as The Daily Star reported yesterday afternoon.
But the Red Devils are also targeting centre-back skipper Mats Hummels, and they’re growing increasingly concerned Gundogan’s departure could scupper their pursuit of the 26 year-old.
Dortmund have made a policy of selling only one key player per season, with Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski jumping ship to Bayern Munich during the last two summer windows.
And having already succumbed to the notion of Gundogan moving on – as reported by BBC Sport last week – they may now refuse to part with their World Cup-winning captain.
