Christian Benteke

According to reports from The Express yesterday afternoon, Chelsea have joined the race to sign Aston Villa star Christian Benteke.

The Belgium international has been in incredible form since Tim Sherwood took the managerial reigns at Villa Park from Paul Lambert in February, going on to bag eleven goals, two assists and five Man of the Match awards in twelve appearances across all competitions – including Villa’s opener in their FA Cup semi-final victory over Liverpool.

As This Is Futbol revealed last month, Sherwood has admitted the 24 year-old could force a move away this summer after racking up a potent haul of 48 goals in 97 appearances across three campaigns for the Birmingham outfit.

The 6 foot 3 front-man has since been linked with Liverpool and Manchester United, with the tabloids mooting a fee of £30million – as This Is Futbol revealed last month.

But The Express now claim Chelsea are considering a £30million bid for the former Genk prodigy. Despite claiming this season’s Premier League title, they’ve struggled to perform during the injury absences of star striker Diego Costa and view Benteke as a formidable back-up option.
