According to reports from The Express this afternoon, Barcelona officials have met with Manchester United and Liverpool-linked defender Dani Alves to try and thrash out a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.
As This Is Futbol informed you last month, the Brazil international is one of a number of right-backs on the Old Trafford radar for the summer window and the Red DevilsĀ areĀ hoping to land him on a free transfer, whilst Liverpool were mooted as rival suitors by The Express back in February.
But revelations today suggest both Premier League sides could miss out on their target, who has won four La Liga titles and two Champions League titles during his time at the Nou Camp, with the Catalan giants now keen to extend his deal.
Barcelona are under a transfer embargo until 2016 and would therefore be unable to replace the 31 year-old for at least another two transfer windows. They’re hoping their unique situation will convince Alves to stay with the club until next January at the earliest.
Whether this will force the likes of Liverpool or Manchester United to table an improved contract offer remains to be seen.
