Move over Mats Hummels: Are Arsenal right to change transfer targets?

Alessio RomagnoliArsenal signed Gabriel Paulista during the January transfer window, but I’m not sure whether this piece of business will be enough to fix the club’s defensive issues.

Arsene Wenger has always been more concerned with his attack. The focus of his transfer budget, his training sessions and his tactics always lean towards getting the most out of his forwards. His defenders often get the cold shoulder.

This has resulted in some fairly big defeats over the years. Think back to Arsenal’s away day losses to Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea last year. If you need a more recent example, then think back to the club’s turgid performance against Monaco. That 3-1 defeat sums up Arsene Wenger’s approach to defending.

Per Mertesacker has hit a rough patch of form. Laurent Koscielny is now a constant injury doubt. With Gabriel Paulista still in the process of finding his feet in English football, The Gunners may be forced into the transfer market once again this summer.

Wouldn’t it be something if Arsene Wenger were to finally add some defensive stability to his team?

This brings me to a recent article published by The Metro, which claims that Arsenal are considering swooping in for Roma’s talented centre-back, Alessio Romagnoli (a suitable name for his current club).

The 20-year-old is currently on loan with Sampdoria, where he’s managed to catch the eyes of fans and pundits alike. He’s still very young, but his talent is there for all to see. He’s quick along the ground, he’s physically powerful and he wins a lot of balls in the air.

When he’s in possession, he’s calm and controlled. He distributes the ball well and helps his team to control possession. If he continues to develop at his current pace, then he could blossom into a Raphael Varane-level talent.

The aforementioned source claims that Arsenal are ditching their interest in Borussia Dortmund centre-back, Mats Hummels, in order to focus on pushing this deal through. That shows how well thought of he currently is.

Let’s hope that an Arsene Wenger bargain is on the way.

What’s your take? Would you rather see Alessio Romagnoli or Mats Hummels in an Arsenal shirt?

Ah i cant see us signing another defender; i think we’re covered there. have a look at my blog here @ http://arsenalwildinnocent.blogspot.ie/

Id like to get him, but that is more due to me growing up having Italian defenders being best along with our back five rather than knowing anything about this lad. He sounds like the type defender which Arsene likes to partner alongside a quick aggressive player like Kos or Gab.
