Arsenal can currently call on plenty of forward options, but I have to say that I’m not particularly convinced by any of them. Assuming Arsene Wenger views Alexis Sanchez as a winger, that leaves The Gunners with Olivier Giroud, Danny Welbeck and Theo Walcott (you could also throw in Yaya Sanogo and Lukas Podolski, if you were feeling generous).
All three of Arsenal’s main strikers have their issues. Olivier Giroud is too slow. Danny Welbeck doesn’t appear to be a natural goal scorer (though to be fair, he has been pushed out wide). Theo Walcott has pace and finishing ability, but he often struggles to make a mark on games. He’s far too quiet and complacent for a player with his level of talent.
With all that in mind, I wouldn’t be particularly surprised if Arsene Wenger were to reach out into the summer transfer market to increase his options in this department. If he brings in a decent player, The Gunners might even be able to challenge for the title next season.
After all: imagine what Arsenal could achieve if they had a striker who’s capable of scoring 25+ goals per season.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic has now entered onto Arsenal’s ‘radar’. The Gunners have sent scouts to watch the the 20-year-old in action and by all accounts, they’ve been impressed by what they’ve seen.
Mitrovic has played 34 games this season and he’s already found the back of the net 15 times. That’s a fantastic return for a striker who’s barely out of his teens. He looks like a player who’s set for big things.
Arsene Wenger has always proven to be a good judge of young talent. If he sees something he likes in Mitrovic, then who are we to doubt him? The aforementioned source claims that the Serbian ace could be available for £15m, a price that’s well within Arsenal’s financial reach. Don’t be surprised if The Professor pursues this one.
