Last summer, as Southampton sold all their best players, numerous clubs began to circle around their star midfielder, Morgan Schneiderlin. The Frenchman pushed for a move, but one never came. He was forced to look on as all his team-mates left.
He must feel like he’s trapped in some kind of purgatory. He was clearly looking to take the next step-up in his career (a step-up that he thoroughly deserves), but he’s had to spend another season at St Mary’s.
The Saints have done fantastically well this season (aided in part by some impressive performances from Schneiderlin, who can’t be accused of half-assing things), but I’m sure the Frenchman would sooner be challenging for silverware and competing in more big games.
If there’s more transfer interest in the player next summer (which I’m sure there will be), then I doubt his current paymasters will hold him back this time.
This brings me to The Metro‘s claim that Arsenal are now ‘ready to push through’ a deal to sign Morgan Schneiderlin. The source goes as far as to claim that the player has already agreed personal terms with The Gunners. They also provide The Saints’ asking price for the Frenchman: £25m.
That’s a lot of money, but it could still prove to be a good deal for a player who’s now making rapid progress in his career. At 25-years-old, Schneiderlin is just about to enter his peak years as a footballer. Now’s the perfect time to snap him up.
The Gunners are crying out for a little more competitive edge in the centre-of-the-park. Francis Coquelin has done a good job (though he has been a little quiet in recent weeks), but Mikel Arteta is a constant injury doubt and Mathieu Flamini isn’t up to snuff. Schneiderlin would add some steel to Arsenal’s midfield and could even help to bolster them from an attacking point of view as well.
He’s got a lot of quality on the ball and he’s a good all rounder. I’d love to see him in an Arsenal shirt. From the look of things, this eventuality isn’t too far off.
