VaraneWhilst the Premier League is spoiled for choice when it comes to attacking talent, I’m not sure that the same can be said of its defenders. Whilst there are a few good players (many of them belonging to Chelsea or Manchester City) in this area of the pitch, lots of them don’t register as being world class.

Manchester United have certainly struggled since losing Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra in one summer. Losing that much experience (and quality), was always going to have a negative impact on this team. The Red Devils should have seen this coming.

Louis Van Gaal focused on bolstering his attack, which has still somehow failed to produce the goods. Now his team lacks balance and they’re still not competing for silverware. It’s a tough position for them to be in.

This brings me to The Express‘s claim that Manchester United are edging ever closer to a deal for Raphael Varane. The Real Madrid centre-back is widely regarded as one of the best young defenders in the world. At just 21-years-old, he’s already a regular presence at The Bernabeu.

He’s quick along the turf, wins a lot of tackles and he’s difficult to muscle off of the ball. He’s also pretty handy in the air and he’s a smart cookie. He could prove to be a good fit for a Premier League side.

Manchester United and Chelsea are both circling around the Frenchman, who (according to the aforementioned source) would prefer to move to Old Trafford. It’s thought that £30m could be enough to close the deal.

If The Red Devils can drag this one across the line, then they’ll have a defender that they can rely on for many more years to come. They’ll also get one over on their title rivals, Chelsea. That strikes me as a win-win.

Here’s hoping that Louis Van Gaal’s ready to swing into action this summer.

What’s your take? Should Raphael Varane be Manchester United’s number one transfer target?
