PjanicLiverpool’s search for a long-term replacement for Steven Gerrard has seen them get linked to all manner of different footballers. How do you go about replacing somebody who has proven to be so influential over the years?

I have to say, I thought that Brendan Rodgers had found Stevie G’s heir when he signed Adam Lallana. The English midfielder was spectacular for Southampton last year, with his superlative technique, his confidence on the ball and his neat, accurate passing. He’s been okay since the move, but I think The Reds could still do better.

The papers seem to think so too. This must be the reason why The Reds continue to pick-up links to exciting midfield talent. As it happens, The Metro recently ran an article suggesting that Liverpool are still interested in signing Roma star, Miralem Pjanic.

The source suggests that Brendan Rodgers is readying a £25m deal for the Bosnian international. Unfortunately, they also note that his current pay-masters are holding out for as much as £37m. That’s a staggeringly huge amount of cash, but it’s also a mark of the man’s quality. His reputation has grown so much over the last 12-18 months that he’s now got one of the biggest price-tags in football.

Not bad, eh?

So what’s all the fuss about? Miralem Pjanic isn’t the paciest midfielder in the world and he’s not a particularly effective goal-scorer (16 in 103 for Roma), but he’s still outrageously useful. There are few players in world football who can match him technically and there’s no doubting his ability to pick a killer pass.

He’s capable of skipping past one challenge, beating a man and sending a striker through on goal. He’s a quick thinker and he can be a game winner on his day. If given the chance, he may even prove to be a worthy successor to Steven Gerrard.

That £37m price-tag is going to be a major stopping block for The Reds, but it may prove to be a good move.

What’s your take? What does the future hold for Miralem Pjanic?
