Nicolas Otamendi (Valencia)Every Manchester United performance seems to bring with it further evidence that all things are not well at Old Trafford. It used to be a joy to watch The Red Devils in action (back when Sir Alex Ferguson) was in charge. Now it’s a slog.

Louis Van Gaal is partly to blame. After all, he was responsible for many of the club’s summer signings, he’s the one who sets his team up and he’s the one who provides tactical instruction.

I’m sure that the Dutchman will be keen to rectify things in the summer. As somebody who’s been in charge of the Holland international team and Bayern Munich during his time, he can’t be all that happy with what United are currently serving up. Surely things have to improve?

This brings me to The Metro‘s exciting claim that Manchester United are looking at two Valencia players. The men in question are top quality centre back, Nicolas Otamendi and midfielder Andre Gomes.

At 27-years-old, Otamendi has managed to accrue 18 caps for the Argentina international team. After a few seasons at FC Porto, he’s now established himself as a key man for Valencia. He’s quick along the turf, good in the air and responds well in high-pressure situations. I’m sure he’d be a good fit for Premier League football.

Then there’s Gomes, who’s reputation continues to grow and grow. He’s only 21-years-old, but he’s already got 3 caps for the Portuguese international side (where there’s plenty of competition for places) and he’s tipped for big things. He’s so comfortable on the ball, he always seems to be in time and space and he’s got a knack for picking out a killer pass.

Together, it’s believed that this dynamic duo will cost The Red Devils as much as £74m. That’s a lot of money, but it’s also a mark of their quality. If this deal comes to pass, it could help to establish Manchester United as a major force once again. Surely, they’d help liven things up at Old Trafford?

What’s your take? Can Manchester United really seal this mammoth £74m deal?
