CavaniEver since Sir Alex Ferguson’s time at the club, Manchester United seem to have had a hankering for world football’s best strikers. How else can you explain the decision to sign Radamel Falcao (on loan) last summer, when The Red Devils could already rely upon the likes of Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney, two of the most feared forwards in Europe.

At the time they even had Javier Hernandez among their ranks, who was struggling for game time (and ended up getting sent out on loan to Real Madrid). Suffice to say, they’re spoiled for choice in this area. As it happens, this is usually the case when it comes to the club’s attacking options.

Don’t be surprised, therefore, if Louis Van Gaal has yet another exciting forward on his summer shopping list. It just seems to be the way of things for Manchester United.

This leads me onto The Metro‘s claim that Manchester United are ‘targeting a mammoth move’ for Paris Saint Germain’s star striker, Edinson Cavani. The Uruguayan is widely regarded as one of the best finishers in world football. As a result, he’s going to come complete with a £60m price-tag.

Since moving to Paris, Cavani has scored 40 goals in 71 games. Back when he was with Napoli, he found the back of the net 104 times in 138 games. These returns are quite remarkable. He’s proven time and time again that he’s a remarkably effective presence in front of goal.

And yet he can’t be fully satisfied with his role at PSG. He’s currently playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic and as a result he’s often played out of position. What’s more he’s playing most of his football in Ligue 1, which is considered to be a lesser league (compared to the likes of the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and the Bundesliga).

If Cavani were to move to Old Trafford, it would probably signal the end of Radamel Falcao’s stay with the club. Given how inconsistent the Colombian has been, I’d argue that The Red Devils would be trading up.

What’s your take? Would you like to see Edinson Cavani in a Manchester United shirt?
